Bangkok Waste Center
2017
Architecture Thesis, Chulalongkorn University
The City of Bangkok produces up to 9,900 Tons of household waste daily; the number growing every year. Department of Environment of Bangkok Metropolitan Administration sees the dire need of raising awareness and educating public more about the issue.
Bangkok Waste Management Learning Center is located within Onnut Waste Disposal Center, which in fact, was once the largest open waste dump in Bangkok, infamously known as Onnut Waste Mountain. It resembled neglected waste management, before finally being terminated in 1995. Thus, the main idea of developing the architecture is it intends to refer to the significant ugly history; but at the same time, becoming a new landmark that represents the green future. Mountainous characteristics are expressed boldly in the design which the structures and volumes are detemined by the criteria of each function.
The Center consists of 3 main parts: indoor exhibition hall, administration /learning facilities, and the recycling facility. Visitors would take the exhibition route, learning about the environment issues, and then towards the observation deck, overlooking the recycling process. The outdoor areas include: green-roof area, activity court, and the constructed wetland landscape, in which all areas contribute in learning about waste management.
