Bangsai Folk Art & Craft Museum

Architecture Studio, Chulalongkorn University

Bangsai Royal Folk Arts & Craft is a royal project in Ayutthaya that focuses on professional training in handicrafts. Products include etching, basketry, dolls, artificial flowers, furniture, weaving, dyeing cloth products, welders, and ceramics.
The new museum is located within the existing craft center site in Bangsar, Ayutthaya, along the banks of the Chao Phraya River. Situated by the water, the building is thought to open up the scenery to the rest of the site and is obligated to create a shared outdoor space for all visitors. Thus, both the landscape and the architecture follow the manner of gradients towards the water. The stepping landscape integrates the Ayutthaya spirit, symbolizing the traditional architectural style of recessing corners. The series of steps provides large seating benches, and the negative creates a performance space by the river.
The temporary exhibition is designed to be part of the steps of the main stairs that take visitors from the reception, passing the private sections, directly towards the permanent indoor exhibition. The permanent exhibition rooms intake natural light through the double-spaced vertical opening. Taking advantage of the ample space from the steep roof, the exhibition hall forms a remarkable space.
